In September 2022, teams of student innovators enrolled in USC Viterbi’s Global Challenges Innovation program (CE486) traveled to the Romanian-Ukrainian borders to witness the response to the War in Ukraine and its regional ramifications.

On December 12 at USC, six teams will pitch solutions aimed at impacting the lives of the people we’ve met on the journey and those still caught behind the frontlines.

Solutions include helping Ukrainian businesses survive, fighting disinformation, health care for displaced people, more efficient emergency funds distribution and novel heating solutions. The teams plan to return in March, 2023 to test early prototypes with their Ukrainian and Romanian partners.

A panel of industry leaders, prominent humanitarians and tech entrepreneurs will judge the live pitches.

About The Program

Created in 2018 in response to the global refugee crisis, the Global Challenges Innovation Program at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering brings together students, faculty, and stakeholders through a collaborative effort that leverages the power of engineering innovation, design, entrepreneurship, systems thinking, ethics and storytelling to innovate real-world solutions to aid people and communities affected by global crises.

The first cohort was featured in the Emmy-winning PBS documentary “Lives, Not Grades”. Five cohorts and a total of 26 social innovation startups have gone through the program to date.
