Advising For Viterbi Excellence
The Journey Begins Here
We approach academic advising a little differently at Viterbi.
For us, advisement is more than just course scheduling and policies. As specialists in student development and engagement, we view student success through the cumulative outcome of academics and personal growth. At the end of your undergraduate Viterbi journey, our goal is that students not only excelled in their academic pursuits but also challenged themselves as leaders and mentors as well as fostered an engaged community of their peers, faculty and advisors.
Advising Update During COVID-19:
Due to the USC Provost Memo regarding COVID-19, all in-person advising appointments have moved to Phone or Video Conference advising appointments and we are still available to answer questions via email. In addition, students can utilize online resources such as their STARS report (on OASIS), their most recent course plan (the Undergraduate Advisement widget on myUSC), and our website. Your health and well being are important to us, and we are here to support you as we adapt to this unprecedented and continually-evolving situation. We appreciate your patience and flexibility.
How does advising work?
During your first year at USC, you will work with a First-Year Advisor. Your advisor will help you get setup in your first semester of classes, find student organizations to join, navigate the policies and guidelines of USC, and everything else that comes with getting acclimated to campus!
As a sophomore, you will begin working directly with your major department. You will work with your department advisor to stay on track to graduation as you dive deeper into your respective major.
Viterbi students meet with an advisor every semester to check-in, update course plans, and continue to stay connected to resources. In addition to Mandatory Advisement, students are welcome to visit their advisor during drop-in hours for quick questions.

Advising 101: Mandatory Advising Prep Workshop
Prior to your mandatory advising appointment, we strongly encourage new freshman to attend an Advising 101: Mandatory Advising Prep Workshop.
These workshops will go over “need-to-knows” such as how to read your STARS report and how to double-count GE courses, which will free up a lot of time during your advising appointment to talk about other plans!
Workshops dates have passed for the Fall 2020 semester but please watch the workshop recording.
Major Exploration Events
Please join us next week for our major exploration events!
Do you want to learn more about the different Viterbi majors and engineering fields? We are inviting Viterbi alumni to talk about their engineering careers and what they think you should know about their respective fields.
Please feel free to attend one or all of the alumni major exploration events. Events will include an open Q&A panel, so bring any questions you have for our alumni to answer.

Please note that all students are expected to consult with their academic advisor prior to completing and submitting a petition or registration form. All Viterbi students are expected to follow their major and general education requirements as outlined in the USC Catalogue.
