GCSP Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ's
No, you do not need to choose a Grad Challenge to get started. You have time to identify a Grand Challenge or theme that you are passionate about.
Students can receive Designation through engaging in experiences that meet the general spirit of Grand Challenges without firm ties to any one theme or challenge; however, if you wish to receive the additional recognition as a GCSP Spirit Scholar, you will identify a particular problem within a theme. Spirit Scholars will follow that problem through their time with GCSP and discuss their experiences in relation to solving for that problem. Students interested in the Spirit Scholars track will be guided through the process of selecting a challenge, along wit the additional requirements they must meet.
Students can join GCSP at any point in their time at Viterbi, however, it is encouraged that students get involved with the program as early as possible. This is to help you have the most possible time to be sure you engage in experiences that will meet the Five Mindsets and take advantage of advisement.
All Viterbi students can engage with GCSP, but only students who meet the Five Mindsets can receive the end result of Designation as a Viterbi Grand Challenges Scholar.
Yes! GCSP is open to students at all stages of their academic journey. Even in your final year, you can engage in activities, attend events, and work towards the designation, though the time remaining in your program may affect the number of experiences you can complete.
Seniors should schedule a time to meet with Dr. Abercrombia to discuss what they have previously done and to see what, if any, Mindsets still need to be fulfilled.
GCSP focuses on experiences completed during your undergraduate career. However, you can use relevant high school experiences to help build your write-ups when applying for the designation. It’s best to discuss specific experiences with your GCSP advisor for guidance.
Experiences that demonstrate engagement in leadership, innovation, research, community impact, and global perspectives, and multidisciplinary thinking generally count toward the Five Mindsets. This typically includes interships, research experience, work experience, student org involvement, competitions, taking a minor or double major, and much more!
