About the Fellowship
The Daben Liu Research Fellowship supports undergraduate students with a passion for research and innovation. Established in 2023, the fellowship provides financial and academic support to students engaged in faculty-mentored research related to artificial intelligence and machine learning. The program aims to encourage exploration, build confidence, and prepare future leaders in research and technology.
About Daben Liu & Weiqing Mao
Daben Liu is the Vice President of Applied Research at Capital One, where he leads the customization of foundation models and manages AI foundation datasets. Previously, he served as a Senior Manager in Apple’s Siri group, where he spent a decade developing Apple’s automatic speech recognition system and expanding Siri's capabilities across over 60 languages and multiple platforms, including iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS. Before his tenure at Apple, Daben was the Chief Technology Officer at 8DWorld Inc., a startup focused on online spoken English education for young EFL students, where he led a team that used AI to detect and correct pronunciation errors. Earlier in his career, he worked as a Senior Scientist at BBN Technologies, conducting research in speech recognition, speaker identification, and audio indexing. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and variety of sports such as tennis, soccer, basketball, and table tennis.
