Study engineering abroad in Singapore

The National University of Singapore is a leading English-speaking, global university centered in Asia. NUS’s 36,000 students come from 100 countries, with international students making up 20% of the undergraduate population.

Academics

At NUS, courses are called modules and units are called modular credits. Exchange students are required to take at least 12 modular credits (MCs) per semester and no more than 20 MCs. In order to maximize your chances of securing at least 12 MCs, NUS recommends that you use all 10 module (course) choices in the online application form. You need to consult with your USC academic advisor in order to determine the appropriate course equivalences at NUS for your degree requirements.

Semester Dates

The fall semester (Semester 1) runs from August to December. The spring semester (Semester 2) runs from January to May. Each semester has 13 weeks of instruction and 2 weeks of exams.

Housing

Students will apply for housing after they have been accepted into the program. More information on how and when to apply for housing will be included in the NUS acceptance letter.

In order to abide by social distancing measures, NUS residences will most likely not be able to operate at full capacity. Students should research off-campus housing options to be safe.

On-campus accommodation is extremely limited and not guaranteed.

Based on the latest border control measures, students may need to self-isolate for up to 10 days upon arrival in Singapore. Student should take this into account when making travel and housing plans. More information regarding arrival procedures will be included in acceptance letters.

Immigration and Insurance

All exchange students are enrolled in the NUS Health and Insurance Scheme (HINS). You are also required to be covered by the USC Overseas Health Insurance plan. Both are mandatory and neither can be waived, no exceptions.

Under the Singapore’s Vaccinated Travel Framework, all travellers entering Singapore can do so without quarantine, testing or entry approvals if they meet the requirements as listed on the Safe Travel Office (STO) website: https://www.ica.gov.sg/enter-transit-depart.

Nominated students should not to make travel or accommodation arrangements for their exchange until they receive their admission offer from NUS (sent via email) around mid-November 2022.

Exchange students are covered under the NUS Medical Insurance Scheme. For more info regarding COVID-related coverage, click here.  

Students are strongly encouraged to purchase supplemental travel insurance to ensure they are adequately covered during their time abroad.

Visas

All exchange students are required to obtain a visa (Student’s Pass). NUS will assist you in obtaining your visa. You are responsible for paying all costs associated with obtaining your visa.
