All videos with appropriate content will be organized into panels and posted for general viewing and discussion for two weeks during the Winter Recess. Papers will be posted for each video. Faculty judges will select award recipients, and one paper will be chosen as a popular favorite by the viewers who visit the Freshman Colloquium site.

Synchronous Panel Discussion Sessions

The panel discussions of papers by award recipients will take place via Zoom on December 7, 8, and 9. Participants will be assigned to small discussion groups arranged around common themes so they may share their work with peers, faculty, and audience members. Zoom links to join panels will be provided a few days prior to the event.
At the start of the session, you are encouraged to give a short oral introduction of your work to the group (no more than five minutes). The session is meant to be discussion-based, so PowerPoints and other multimedia presentations are not used as part of your introduction.

Judging and Prizes

Judges are USC faculty members primarily from the USC Writing Program, who will award prizes to selected works. (You might want to talk to your own professor before deciding which essay to submit.) One additional prize will be based on comments by visitors to the Freshman Colloquium. The judges will award the following prizes:

  • First Prize (6 prizes): One set of Apple AirPods will be awarded for outstanding work, to five recipients selected by the judges and one by the audience.
  • Honorable Mention (10 prizes): One pair of wired Beats headphones will be awarded for runners-up to the judges’ selections.

Not for Prize consideration: Group and Full-class projects are welcome for posting and possible discussion.
