    A Message from the Dean

Welcome to the USC Viterbi School of Engineering Commencement website. We are so excited to celebrate this momentous occasion with the graduating students and their families.

Our graduates have spent the last several years at USC Viterbi studying with world-class faculty, pushing themselves intellectually and growing personally and intellectually in supportive and stimulating environments.

They will graduate and move on to “Create the World that Never Was”, whether in the academy, in the private sector, in government or as entrepreneurs. Perhaps one of them will create the next big thing right here in Southern California. They will use engineering and technology, and of our philosophy of Engineering+ in imaginative new ways for the benefit of the world.

Graduation is a time of great joy for all of us, families, faculty, and staff. Being the parent of three USC graduates, USC commencement holds a special place in my heart. I look forward to Commencement Week and to celebrate Commencement for the amazing Class of 2019.

Yoky Matsuoka, Vice President, Product Management for Google

Yoky Matsuoka, currently Vice President, Product Management for Google, grew up hoping she would become a professional tennis player, but after a series of injuries she reverted to another love: science. Yoky earned a Bachelor of Science degree from UC Berkeley (EECS, 1993), a Masters (1995), and PhD (1998) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with a specialty in the emerging fields of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Neuroscience. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University’s Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences from 1998 to 2000. Subsequently, she became a professor at Carnegie Mellon University (2001 – 2010) before joining the University of Washington (2006 – 2011), where she developed robotic devices for rehabilitating and assisting the human body and brain. In late 2009, Yoky joined Google[x] as one of the three founding members and, later, served as vice president of technology at Nest. In 2015 she became CEO at Quanttus, before joining Apple Health in 2016, where she worked on healthcare product development.
