Project Title: Composite Beam Design using COSB (Composite Oriented Strand Board) and Additive Manufacturing Technology
Faculty / PI: Bo Jin
Lab Name: Advanced Composites Design Team
Department: Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
Research Website: composites.usc.edu
# of Freshmen Positions: 5
# of Continuing Student Positions: 5
Project Description: I have research positions for 5 to 10 undergrad students, on the topics of additive manufacturing and the design of beam/bridge structures made of aerospace/automotive composite materials that can withstand and carry a large load of > 100k lbs force. The beam will be designed and manufactured at USC’s Advanced Composites Design Team (ACDT) under the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department (AME), while the student applicants are not necessarily from AME department but can be from any USC department. With help from Prof. Bo Jin, students will aim at publishing their research results at the annual SAMPE and CAMX technical conferences, as well as publish at top peer-reviewed journals in the aerospace/automotive composites field. If successful, students will also utilize the research results and attend the annual Student Composite Bridge Contest held by SAMPE (next one in May 2023). We will be paying for all the logistics during the contest, including round trip flights, hotels, and conference and contest registration fees. In 2022 May, our ACDT members attended the 2022 SAMPE Student Bridge Contest and won TWO world championships in two different categories. The new students will be working with the current members of the team, and mentored by Prof. Bo Jin.
Student Responsibilities: Design, Manufacture, Testing, and Characterization of advanced aerospace composites and structures.
